Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17.9 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 20.2 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 27.6 × 22.7 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Renoir's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 65 × 54 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris, France. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The illuminated interior of an all-night diner pierces the darkness of an empty urban street, creating a theatrical stage where four solitary figures exist in shared isolation. Three patrons occupy the curved counter—a couple seated together yet psychologically apart, and a lone man with his back to us—while a white-uniformed server tends to his nocturnal duties. The scene unfolds behind vast plate-glass windows that transform the establishment into a luminous aquarium, its inhabitants suspended in time and disconnected from the sleeping city beyond.
Hopper's palette centers on the interplay between warm interior light and cool exterior darkness. The golden glow emanating from within bathes the figures and counter in amber tones, while the street outside remains shrouded in deep blues and purples. A striking emerald green defines the diner's exterior trim and echoes in subtle undertones throughout the composition. This chromatic tension between warmth and coldness reinforces the psychological distance between human connection and urban alienation.
The artist's technique reveals a methodical approach to surface and form. Broad, smooth brushstrokes eliminate unnecessary detail, creating planes of color that emphasize the scene's geometric clarity. The paint application appears almost flat in places, yet subtle gradations in the shadows and reflections on the window glass demonstrate Hopper's sophisticated handling of light. This restraint in execution mirrors the emotional reserve of the subjects themselves.
The composition operates through a series of horizontal and vertical elements that create a rigid architectural framework. The long counter establishes the primary horizontal axis, while the window mullions and building edges provide vertical counterpoints. The curved corner of the diner introduces the sole departure from this rectilinear scheme, drawing the eye into the illuminated interior. The absence of a visible entrance heightens the sense of enclosure and separation, transforming the viewers into voyeurs observing an unreachable world.
This 1942 work emerged during a period of increasing urbanization and social fragmentation in American life. Hopper's vision transcends mere documentation, creating instead a meditation on modern existence where proximity fails to generate intimacy. The electric light that makes urban life possible also exposes its fundamental solitude, rendering each figure an island of consciousness within the metropolitan night.
