Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 18.3 in print therefore arrives as 24.1 × 20.7 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 33.9 × 28.6 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Rembrandt's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 55.1 × 46.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Brilliant sunlight crashes through leaded glass. Against the deep umber shadows of this scholar's chamber, the illumination appears almost violent in its intensity. A Man seated reading at a Table in a Lofty Room, attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn circa 1628-30, presents us with one of the Dutch Golden Age's most contested yet compelling interior scenes. The National Gallery acquired this small panel painting in 1917 as an authentic Rembrandt, though subsequent scholarship has complicated that certainty.

Raw sienna and burnt umber dominate. The solitary figure hunches over his folio, consumed by text we cannot read. One shutter stands closed; through the others, light pours with such force that the wall seems to vibrate under its impact. Thick impasto defines these luminous passages—white paint accumulated in ridges that catch and refract actual gallery light, creating a dialogue between painted and real illumination. Grey detailing distinguishes the glazed upper windows from the clear opening below. This distinction matters. Rembrandt, or whoever held the brush, understood how different surfaces fracture light differently.

Beyond the bright geometry of windows, darkness swallows most of the room. Yet patience reveals treasures: leather-bound volumes line distant shelves, two globes hover like planets above them. Incised lines mark the shutter hinges—an unusual technique that has troubled connoisseurs. The brushwork describing the scholar himself appears rougher, less assured than we expect from the master's hand. Perhaps studio assistance explains these variations. Perhaps not.

Scientific analysis of the wooden support reveals construction methods undocumented in confirmed Rembrandts. The faint signature in the right foreground? Almost certainly fraudulent, added later by someone hoping to enhance value. Yet the paint chemistry and panel dating align with Leiden workshop practices of 1625-31, before the artist's Amsterdam years transformed his approach. During this period, melancholic scholars populated numerous canvases—a fashion that Rembrandt abandoned after 1631, never to revisit.

Attribution matters less than effect. Whoever created this chamber understood chiaroscuro's psychological weight. Light doesn't merely illuminate; it isolates. The scholar sits marooned in his pool of brightness while knowledge itself—those books, those globes mapping unknown worlds—recedes into shadow. One might imagine the scratch of quill on parchment, though the figure only reads, never writes.
Whether painted by Rembrandt himself or by someone steeped in his methods, the image captures that particular solitude of intellectual pursuit. Knowledge demands sacrifice. Enlightenment requires darkness to define its edges.
