Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13.9 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.3 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 31.7 × 49.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Nicolas Poussin's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 116 × 176 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Two women crouch in the foreground, exposed and vulnerable, scooping ashes from the dusty earth. The act is furtive – an illegal gathering of a dead man's remains – yet Nicolas Poussin stages it within a landscape so ordered, so architecturally composed, that the human drama nearly disappears into the geometry of trees, temples, and stone.

This is Landscape with the Gathering of the Ashes of Phocion, painted in 1648, and it tells the story of a wronged Athenian general. Phocion, falsely condemned for treason in the fourth century B.C., was denied even a dignified cremation within the city walls. Here his widow kneels to recover what remains of him – a handful of ash – while her companion glances nervously toward a grove on the right, where a youth seems to lurk among the shadows. That sideways look carries the painting's real tension. Everything else is calm.

And what a calm it is. The middle distance unfolds like a stage set: classical buildings with columned porticos, warm-roofed villas in sienna and umber, figures strolling or resting with no apparent urgency. Behind them, a massive rocky outcrop – craggy, vertical, almost theatrical – rises against a sky of muted cobalt streaked with pale cloud. Nature dwarfs the architecture, which in turn dwarfs the human figures. Poussin understood hierarchy. The rocks remind us that empires crumble; the widow reminds us that love persists in secret.

Color here is subdued but deeply considered. Cool greens dominate the dense canopy of trees that frame the composition on both sides, functioning as natural curtains – repoussoir elements that push the eye inward toward the sunlit center. Warm ochres and terracotta punctuate the buildings. The widow's blue robe is the most saturated note in the lower register, a quiet signal that she is the emotional center despite her small scale.

Poussin's brushwork is precise without being rigid. Foliage is built up in careful, layered touches – leaf by leaf, almost – yet the overall effect feels organic, not stiff. Compare this to Claude Lorrain's golden, haze-dissolved landscapes of the same decade: where Claude dissolves form in light, Poussin constructs it with architectural certainty. Every tree trunk, every cornice, every shadow has weight and place.

Commissioned by a wealthy French silk merchant alongside a companion piece depicting Phocion's funeral procession, this painting was always meant to be read as moral narrative. Yet standing before it, what lingers is not the lesson but the silence. You can almost feel the dry heat of a Mediterranean afternoon, the stillness before someone notices. One might imagine the soft scrape of fingers against powdery earth – the only sound in a world that has already moved on from injustice.

Perhaps that is what makes Nicolas Poussin's vision so enduring. He does not dramatize grief. He sets it quietly within a world that refuses to acknowledge it, and lets the contrast do all the work.
