Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.1 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 18.5 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 49.2 × 36.7 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Nicolas Poussin's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 97.5 × 72.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The narrative unfolds within a compressed rocky grotto, where the diminished figure of Midas appears almost as an afterthought to the monumental river deity dominating the foreground. Poussin presents the Pactolus as a bearded classical giant, his muscular form twisted in repose, one hand reaching toward the penitent king while water flows from the vessel at his feet. Two cherubic putti occupy the lower right, their plump forms and water jugs serving both as allegorical markers and compositional anchors. The landscape itself becomes a participant in the drama—craggy outcroppings and overhanging boulders create an atmosphere of primitive sanctity appropriate to this moment of divine intervention.
The palette reveals Poussin's early Roman sensibilities, built upon a foundation of umbers and ochres that suggest both the earthiness of the setting and the weight of Midas's predicament. Flesh tones range from the warm ivory of the river god's torso to the deeper, shadowed browns of the background figures. A muted green-gray defines the drapery, while touches of rust and terracotta enliven the rocky surfaces. This restrained chromatic approach, characteristic of Poussin's developing neoclassical vocabulary, subordinates color to form and narrative clarity.
The brushwork demonstrates a young artist negotiating between observed naturalism and idealized form. Surfaces are built up with careful modeling, particularly evident in the river god's anatomy, where light plays across carefully articulated musculature. Yet there remains a certain hardness to the execution, a sculptural quality that would become more refined in Poussin's mature work. The treatment of the landscape elements shows greater freedom, with looser, more painterly passages suggesting vegetation and atmospheric depth.
Compositionally, Poussin employs a diagonal recession that leads from the prominent foreground figure through Midas to the distant foliage. The river god's reclining form creates a powerful horizontal element, counterbalanced by the vertical thrust of the rocky walls. This careful geometric structuring, enhanced by the strategic placement of the putti and ceramic vessels, demonstrates Poussin's early mastery of classical compositional principles. The painting represents not merely mythological illustration but a philosophical meditation on hubris and redemption, rendered with the intellectual rigor that would define Poussin's contribution to seventeenth-century art.
