Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16.2 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 31 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Claude Monet's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 60 × 79.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery of Art, Washington, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The Seine at Argenteuil unfolds before us as a symphony of leisure and light, where the solidity of the bridge's stone arches meets the ephemeral dance of water and air. Monet presents a scene of bourgeois pleasure-seeking: sailboats drift languidly across the river's surface, their white canvas catching the afternoon breeze, while a darker vessel with golden masts occupies the foreground. The bridge itself, that feat of nineteenth-century engineering, carries its cargo of promenaders—reduced to mere suggestions of human presence—while beyond, the village nestles among verdant banks, its buildings catching the warmth of sunlight.
The chromatic construction reveals Monet's evolving relationship with pure color. The water becomes a patchwork of blues—cerulean, cobalt, ultramarine—interrupted by flickering whites and pale yellows that suggest reflected light. The sky, rendered in broader sweeps of pigment, moves from pale blue through cream to touches of rose in the clouds. Green dominates the riverbanks, but not as a monolithic presence; rather, it fractures into myriad tones from emerald to olive, each mark distinct yet contributing to the overall verdancy.
The artist's touch varies dramatically across the canvas surface. Where water meets light, the brush skitters and dances, leaving broken traces that capture the river's restless energy. The foliage receives a different treatment—dense, almost sculptural applications of paint that build form through accumulation. The architectural elements of the bridge demand yet another approach: more controlled, though never rigid, maintaining the sense of observed reality without descending into mere documentation.
Compositionally, Monet establishes a careful equilibrium between horizontal and vertical elements. The bridge's span creates a strong lateral movement, anchored by the vertical thrust of the masts and balanced by the trees' upward reach. The placement of the dark-hulled boat in the foreground provides both a point of entry and a measure of spatial recession, leading the eye naturally toward the distant shore.
This work exemplifies the Impressionist project at its most coherent—not merely the recording of transient effects, but the transformation of perception itself into painterly language. The familiar subject matter of suburban leisure becomes, through Monet's distinctive vision, an investigation into the very nature of seeing.
