Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 12.6 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 14.9 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 36.5 × 63 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Claude Monet's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 89.5 × 150.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The churning waters of the Seine's confluence with the English Channel dominate this ambitious early work, where fishing vessels navigate the treacherous currents off Honfleur. A solitary boat with dark hull and rust-colored sails occupies the left foreground, its crew battling the elements, while a small rowing boat below struggles against the waves. The distant fleet spreads across the horizon, their triangular sails catching the prevailing wind, with a lighthouse standing sentinel against the grey-green waters. Seabirds wheel overhead, their white forms punctuating the turbulent sky.
Monet's palette embraces the muted tonalities of northern maritime light—greys, browns, and olive greens predominate, with touches of warmer ochre in the sails providing subtle contrast. The sky, occupying half the canvas, shifts from pale blue patches to dense accumulations of grey and cream, capturing the volatile weather patterns of the Norman coast. This restrained chromatic approach aligns with Realist principles, eschewing the prettified marine views favored by academic painters for a more truthful rendering of working vessels in challenging conditions.
The brushwork reveals a young artist negotiating between observed detail and painterly expression. While the foreground waves display vigorous, directional strokes that convey movement and spray, the background elements remain more controlled, painted with the precision expected of Salon submissions. This tension between spontaneity and finish would later resolve itself in Monet's mature Impressionist works, but here it creates an intriguing dialogue between academic convention and nascent modernism.
Compositionally, Monet employs a low horizon line that emphasizes the drama of sky and sea. The diagonal thrust of the principal vessel's mast creates dynamic tension, while the scattered fleet provides rhythmic intervals across the middle distance. The small rowing boat serves as a crucial compositional anchor, its human scale emphasizing the vastness of the natural forces at play.
This calculated studio production, based on plein air sketches, demonstrates Monet's early allegiance to Courbet's brand of Realism while anticipating his future innovations. The subject matter—working boats rather than pleasure craft—signals democratic sympathies, while the handling of atmospheric effects hints at the optical investigations that would soon transform French painting. Though constrained by Salon expectations, the painting announces a formidable new talent engaging seriously with both tradition and modernity.
