Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 17.5 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 19.9 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 33.4 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Claude Monet's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 65 × 81 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia. Full size guide.

About the Painting

In 1883, Monet ventured to the dramatic seaside resort of Étretat during a winter spell, intent on capturing the raw power of the ocean and the massive limestone cliffs that flank this stretch of the Normandy coast. By focusing on the craggy outcrop and leaving no hint of the bustling town, he situates us firmly within nature’s domain. This was a favored locale for holidaymakers, yet the painting resolutely turns away from the resort’s distraction, directing our attention to the spectacle of rough surf as it confronts land.

Much of the artwork’s impact stems from the way Monet constructs the scene. The eye is immediately drawn to the volcanic surge of frothing waves, then propelled upward by the towering edge of the cliff - scored by the zigzagging paths of casual visitors. Tiny figures huddled at the shore amplify the scale of this elemental confrontation, their mere presence highlighting humanity’s insignificance in the face of natural grandeur. The bold shape of a rock formation in the distance, just beneath the cliff line, further punctuates this sense of dramatic tension between sea and sky.

The colors here evoke the sober, urgent light of a cloudy winter day. Layers of grey mingle with cool blues and subdued greens, conjuring an atmosphere that is at once menacing and oddly captivating. Monet’s application of white - skillfully brushed in swirling strokes across the surf - leads us to sense the chill of the spray and the pounding momentum of the ocean. The painting is less about vibrant hue than it is about tonal subtleties, each layered color reinforcing the turbulence and bracing wind at the water’s edge.

Technically, Rough Weather at Étretat reveals Monet’s increasing willingness to push his brushwork towards a more vigorous style. Broad, energetic strokes replicate the motion of the waves, offering an almost tactile sensation of the sea’s relentless churn. The surviving grain of sand in the paint, a tiny remnant of Monet’s on-location efforts, underscores just how closely he grappled with these conditions. Braving the cold and salt spray, he produced a painting that transcends the observational, giving us a glimpse of nature’s tumult and reminding us that the artist’s own presence was as transient as the restless surf.
