Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 14 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.3 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 18 × 28 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Isaac Levitan's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 82 × 126 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in The Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The canvas presents a river meandering through the Russian countryside at the height of autumn's transformation. Birch trees, their slender trunks pale against the landscape, dominate the left foreground, their foliage rendered in brilliant yellows that seem to vibrate against the cerulean sky. The waterway cuts a sinuous path through verdant meadows that slope gently toward its banks, while distant hills clothed in autumn's varied palette complete the panoramic view. Small touches of red vegetation punctuate the river's edge, providing chromatic counterpoints to the prevailing golds and greens.
Levitan's palette achieves remarkable luminosity through the juxtaposition of warm and cool tones. The golden birches sing against the blue sky, while the river reflects both elements in its mirror-like surface. This interplay of complementary colors creates an atmospheric vibrancy that transcends mere representation. The artist employs pure, unmixed pigments in the foliage, allowing each brushstroke to maintain its chromatic integrity, while the meadows display more nuanced gradations of green, ochre, and umber.
The brushwork reveals confident spontaneity, particularly in the birch leaves where individual strokes of impasto create texture and movement. Levitan's technique varies purposefully across the canvas – broader, more fluid applications define the distant hills and sky, while the foreground receives more articulated treatment. This variation in paint handling enhances the sense of spatial recession and atmospheric perspective.
Compositionally, the river serves as the painting's structural spine, leading the viewer's eye from the immediate foreground deep into the pictorial space. The birches create a strong vertical element that anchors the left side, balanced by the horizontal sweep of the meadows and the gentle undulation of the distant hills. This careful orchestration of elements creates both stability and dynamism.
As a quintessential example of Russian "mood landscape," this work exemplifies Levitan's singular ability to capture nature's transitional moments. Rather than depicting autumn at its most dramatic, he presents a moment of perfect equilibrium – summer's warmth still lingers in the golden light, yet change whispers through every brushstroke. The painting belongs to what contemporaries termed his "major cycle," where intimate observation expands into symphonic expression, transforming the particular into the universal.
