Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.4 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 28 × 37.8 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Franz Krüger's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 46 × 61 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Germany. Full size guide.

About the Painting

In this commanding work, Franz Krüger captures the exhilarating moment of a hunting party's departure on a blustery autumn morning. A solitary rider, cloaked in gray, charges forward on a muscular bay horse while leading four hunting dogs - two slender greyhound-type hounds and two darker companions. The wind dramatically billows the rider's cloak behind him like a sail, conveying both movement and the raw elements of nature. In the misty background to the left, shadowy figures of additional riders and horses wait on a distant hill, establishing depth and narrative context.

Krüger's palette is deliberately restrained yet emotionally evocative. The painting is dominated by earthy browns of the terrain, the rich chestnut coat of the horse, and the muted grays of the sky and rider's clothing. This somber color scheme perfectly captures the atmospheric conditions of an autumn hunt - the dampness in the air, the chill of morning, the overcast sky threatening rain. Small touches of red at the horse's saddle and the white and black contrasts of the dogs provide visual punctuation against this monochromatic background.

The artist's technique reveals his exceptional understanding of equine anatomy and canine movement. Each brushstroke defining the horse's muscular form conveys power and nervous energy - from the flared nostrils to the flowing tail and tense legs. The texture of the horse's coat is rendered with particular sensitivity, revealing subtle shifts in light as it falls across the animal's flanks. The dogs are painted with equal precision, their alert postures and varied gaits indicating their eagerness for the hunt ahead. Krüger's brushwork becomes looser and more atmospheric in the background, where the misty landscape recedes into suggestion rather than detail.

The composition is masterfully dynamic. The diagonal thrust of movement from right to left creates a sense of determined forward motion, while the billowing cloak forms a counterbalance that anchors the scene. The positioning of the dogs - spread across the lower portion of the canvas - leads our eye through the painting while suggesting the imminent dispersion of the hunting party across the landscape. Several rocks in the foreground provide visual weight and grounding to the otherwise kinetic scene.

This work, created when Krüger was merely 21 years old, already displays the exceptional skill in equestrian portrayal that would earn him the nickname "Pferde-Krüger" (Horse Krüger). As part of a pendant pair with "Heimkehr von der Jagd" (Returning from the hunt), it demonstrates the young artist's ability to capture not merely the physical details of a hunting scene but its emotional tenor - the anticipation, energy, and communion with nature that characterized aristocratic hunting culture in early 19th century Germany. The painting exemplifies the shift toward a more naturalistic approach in German art of the period, blending careful observation with atmospheric effect to create a scene that feels both authentic and quietly dramatic.
