Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 18.2 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 20.6 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 35.4 × 29.8 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Willem Kalf's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 79.4 × 67.3 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid, Spain. Full size guide.

About the Painting

That spiral of lemon peel catches you first—not the golden nautilus cup, oddly enough. Willem Kalf knew exactly what he was doing in 1662, letting that pale membrane curl downward like a question mark, its pithy underside still damp-looking after three and a half centuries. The painting lives in darkness. Not metaphorically—literally. The background is lamp-black, the kind of void Dutch still life painters used to make their treasures levitate.

Look at that nautilus cup. Some goldsmith in Augsburg or Amsterdam took a chambered shell from the Indian Ocean and imprisoned it in metalwork, crowned it with what might be Neptune's horse rearing up, all writhing fins and scales. The Thyssen-museum owns similar pieces—they cost more than houses back then. Kalf painted this particular monster at least six times, always slightly differently. Here, he lets a single highlight run along the creature's spine like electricity.

The Ming bowl tells its own story. Cobalt blue figures process across white porcelain—traders, perhaps, or court officials. The Dutch were obsessed with this stuff. Ships' manifests from the period list thousands of pieces, most of them smashed to fragments before reaching Amsterdam. Kalf builds the surface with transparent glazes, each one catching light at a different depth. You can feel the coolness of it, that particular ceramic chill that never quite warms to room temperature.

His brushwork shifts like a musician changing tempo. Where the Persian carpet tumbles off the table edge—all crimson and burnt umber—the paint thickens, dragged wet into wet. But the wine in that covered glass? Three strokes, maybe four. Burgundy liquid rendered with the economy of someone who's painted wine a hundred times and knows exactly how little paint you need to make it convincing. The filigree cover on the glass is just scratched lines through wet pigment, yet it reads as delicate metalwork.

Everything tilts slightly leftward, as if the table has one short leg. This subtle instability runs through all of Kalf's mature work—objects about to slide, fruit on the verge of rolling away. That half-peeled lemon isn't casual; someone was interrupted. The knife lies abandoned. Even the peach, soft as a bruise in the shadows, seems placed there temporarily.

Still Life with Nautilus Cup operates on multiple frequencies. Surface level: here's what Dutch merchants could afford by 1662. Deeper: the conquistador's shell, the Chinese potter's bowl, the Persian weaver's carpet—an empire condensed to a tabletop. Deeper still: everything here will outlast its owner. The painting asks uncomfortable questions about possession. What owns what?

We're still asking. Every unboxing video, every shelf styled for social media, every collector's archive—they're all descendents of this moment when Willem Kalf decided that materialism deserved the same attention as mythology. He was right, wasn't he?
