Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 14.8 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 17.2 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 28.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Juan Gris's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 127.6 × 88.3 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A top hat perches at the apex of the composition like a dark crown, anchoring a figure who is all angles, planes, and metropolitan poise. Juan Gris painted this café dandy in 1912, and the geometry is relentless – every limb, every fold of black suit, every sliver of background has been parsed into interlocking facets that click together like a jigsaw cut by a mathematician.

And that is precisely what happened. Gris was the only painter at the 1912 Salon de la Section d'Or who genuinely employed Golden Section proportions to scaffold his compositions. Where Picasso and Braque fragmented form by instinct and improvisation, Gris built it up through calibrated ratios. The difference is audible, almost – this picture hums with structural certainty rather than improvisatory restlessness.

Look at the man himself. He sits at a small café table, one hand resting on the back of a chair, the other cradling what appears to be a glass of absinthe. A martini glass sits on the table's edge, its triangular silhouette rhyming with the dozens of angular facets surrounding it. His crossed legs thrust forward in sharp diagonals, while the striped awning behind him – rendered in warm sienna and ochre verticals – provides one of the few passages of pattern that isn't fractured. Through a gap to the left, a Parisian streetscape emerges: pale, blocky buildings compressed into a shallow stage flat.

The palette is deliberately restrained. Greys, blacks, umber, and muted tans dominate, punctuated only by those amber-orange stripes and a few touches of dull gold. Colour here is not decorative; it is architectural, sorting planes into foreground and middle distance the way a draughtsman might use hatching to indicate depth. Yet depth barely exists – everything is pushed toward the surface, layered rather than receding.

Partly hidden to the left of the man's shoulder, the letters "PIC" and "AP" appear on what looks like a poster or newspaper fragment. These are sly nods to Picasso and the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, Cubism's most passionate critical voice. Gris tucks the homage into the urban clutter as naturally as a café bill tucked under a saucer. One might imagine him smiling as he painted them – a private wink inside a public experiment.

Compare this canvas with Picasso's own café scenes from the same period – the 1911-12 aficionado paintings, for instance – and the difference in temperament is striking. Picasso dissolves his subjects until they nearly vanish into ambient shimmer. Gris keeps his figure legible. The man remains a man: identifiable, upright, socially specific. He is a dandy, after all, and a dandy insists on being seen.

What lingers is the strange coolness of the scene. There is no warmth of conversation, no aroma of coffee or anise. The air feels still, almost pressed flat between glass plates. Juan Gris has given us a modern gentleman frozen inside a lattice of thought – not so much sitting in a café as constructed from the idea of one. Stand with Man in a Café long enough and you begin to feel the grid beneath your own perception, the invisible scaffolding that turns looking into knowing.
