Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the print is framed. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank paper on every side, at no extra cost, so your framer has room to work. A 11.3 × 15.6 in print therefore arrives as 13.6 × 18 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 14.2 × 19.7 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is a work on paper: a watercolor, pastel, etching or drawing. We match the print medium to the original: works on paper go on fine art paper, oil paintings go on canvas. Our paper is pure cotton, 180 g/m² Fine Art Paper, finely textured and matte, free of optical brighteners, acids and lignin. It carries the dark densities and the fine detail of J. M. W. Turner's original without any shine. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 28.6 × 39.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Yale Center for British Art, Connecticut, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A cone of incandescent earth rises from the Bay of Naples, its apex erupting in a vertical plume that blasts apart the night. Below the volcanic pyrotechnics, faint silhouettes of masonry skirt the shoreline, while small boats list in a copper-coloured swell. On the strand, tiny figures scatter like tossed match-heads, their gestures swallowed by the scale of the convulsion. Turner presents no anecdotal foreground, only the stark drama of nature’s own theatre and humanity reduced to marginal notation.

The chromatic structure hinges on a single exchange: molten reds, oranges, and flares of zinc-white collide with deep marine blues and sooty violets. Light behaves almost as a substance, pooling on the water’s surface before rising again in the atmospheric shockwave around the crater. By forcing complementary hues into volatile adjacency, Turner makes colour itself the agent of terror and awe; the eye wavers between attraction to the incandescent core and recoil from the enveloping darkness.

Close inspection reveals a daring economy of means. Transparent washes are propelled by whiplash strokes, then seized with impastoed gouache to crystallise the eruptive spray. Along the shoreline he drags a nearly dry brush, leaving granular streaks that impersonate masonry bathed in reflected fire. Elsewhere the paper is abraded or even scored, allowing buried layers to flare through like sparks. The seeming spontaneity masks rigorous control: every mark accelerates the sensation of upward force.

Compositionally, the canvas is a vortex. The pyramidal mass of Vesuvius lodges dead-centre, but its flanks are pushed outward by radial striations in cloud and lava, so that the entire field seems to expand and contract in the same breath. A vertical shaft of reflected fire anchors the foreground, tethering the celestial blast to the human scale at the water’s edge. The eye is thus guided in a continuous loop—crater to sky, sky to sea, sea to shore—never allowed to settle.

Painted two years before Turner set foot in Italy, the work is an imaginative construction informed by travel literature, scientific speculation, and the age’s appetite for the sublime. Contemporary geology had begun to treat volcanoes as engines of a restless planet, collapsing Biblical chronology and unsettling certainties. Turner seizes the intellectual tremor as much as the physical one, outstripping earlier vedute by replacing polite observation with a vision of imminent cataclysm that is as much psychological as topographical.
