Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16.1 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.4 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 38 × 51.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of J. M. W. Turner's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 92 × 123.2 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Cleveland Museum of Art, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Turner's canvas captures the catastrophic conflagration of October 16, 1834, when fire consumed the Houses of Parliament. Viewed from the southeast bank of the Thames, the scene presents a panorama of destruction rendered with extraordinary atmospheric intensity. The parliamentary buildings dissolve into sheets of flame that leap skyward, their architectural forms barely discernible through the inferno. Along the riverbank, crowds of spectators gather in darkened silhouette, bearing witness to this spectacular calamity. Small vessels navigate the Thames in the lower right, their crews struggling toward the blaze in what appears a futile attempt at intervention.
The chromatic orchestration reveals Turner at his most audacious. Golden-orange flames dominate the central portion, their incandescent heat reflected in the river's surface, creating a vertical axis of light that bisects the composition. These warm tones gradually dissipate into cooler grays and blues at the periphery, where smoke mingles with night sky. The interplay between fire and water generates a luminous, almost molten quality in the Thames, transforming the river into a mirror of destruction.
Turner's brushwork demonstrates remarkable variability—from the loose, gestural strokes that suggest billowing smoke to the more controlled applications defining the water's reflective surface. Paint appears to have been applied both thickly and thinly, creating textural contrasts that enhance the scene's dramatic impact. The artist's technique borders on the abstract, particularly in the upper reaches where flame and smoke merge in an indeterminate haze.
Compositionally, Turner employs a diagonal thrust from lower right to upper left, following the trajectory of the flames. This dynamic movement destabilizes the viewer's perspective, reinforcing the sense of chaos. The dark masses of spectators anchor the foreground, providing scale while emphasizing humanity's diminutive presence before nature's destructive force.
While grounded in historical fact—the fire did indeed rage uncontrollably due to low tide hampering firefighting efforts—Turner transcends mere documentation. He amplifies the flames' height and intensity, transforming a civic disaster into a meditation on elemental power. The painting exists at the intersection of reportage and romanticism, where observed reality becomes the vehicle for exploring sublime terror. Turner's Thames becomes not merely a geographical feature but a metaphorical boundary between order and chaos, civilization and primal force.
