Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.6 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 18.9 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 31.5 × 24.1 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Jan van Huysum's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 79.1 × 60.6 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Vermillion poppies cascade from the arrangement's upper reaches, their papery petals catching light as if lit from within. Against the profound darkness that envelops Jan van Huysum's Vase with Flowers, c.1720, each bloom emerges with startling clarity—a theatrical presentation where flowers become performers on a velvet-black stage. Tulips unfurl in ivory and striped variations, their forms both sculptural and ephemeral. Below, a bird's nest cradles three eggs, grounding this aerial display with earthbound mortality.

Van Huysum orchestrates color with calculated precision. Ultramarine irises anchor the left side while coral-toned ranunculus punctuate the right. Creamy roses, their petals rendered with glazing techniques that build translucent layers, occupy the composition's heart. Each hue vibrates against the tenebrous ground. Cerulean morning glories trail downward, their delicate throats touched with white. This isn't mere botanical documentation—it's chromatic theater.

Brushwork varies dramatically across the surface. Smooth, almost invisible strokes define the tulip petals' silken surfaces. Elsewhere, Van Huysum applies paint more boldly, particularly in rendering the nest's rough texture and the leaves' veined architecture. One can detect, in the lower left quadrant, where his brush has scraped through wet paint to suggest a stem's highlight—a technique that anticipates later centuries' more expressionistic approaches. The Dutch Golden Age tradition lives here, yet something else stirs. Rococo sensibilities creep into the arrangement's serpentine curves.

Diagonal thrusts dominate the composition. From the upper left, that magnificent blue iris leads the eye rightward and down, through the pale roses, toward the nest. Nothing sits still. Even seemingly stable elements—the classical urn, barely visible beneath the floral explosion—participate in this dynamic spiral. Perhaps Van Huysum understood that stillness itself is illusion; even cut flowers continue their slow dance toward decay.

Around 1720, when this work emerged from Van Huysum's Amsterdam studio, the artist stood at a crossroads. Soon he would abandon these dark backgrounds for lighter, architectural settings—a shift that would define his later career. Yet here, in Dulwich Picture Gallery's remarkable example, darkness serves as more than backdrop. It becomes active participant, pushing each bloom forward while suggesting infinite recession. Compare this to Rachel Ruysch's contemporary pieces: where she maintains equilibrium, Van Huysum courts controlled chaos.

Insects punctuate the arrangement—a butterfly here, an ant there—reminders that this artificial paradise harbors life beyond the merely decorative. One imagines the soft buzz of wings, the whisper of petals dropping. These flowers exist outside time, perpetually fresh yet forever on the verge of collapse. Contemporary viewers, accustomed to photography's instant capture, might miss what Van Huysum offers: not a moment frozen but duration itself, rendered visible through patient accumulation of observed detail.
