Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 12 × 20 in print therefore arrives as 14.4 × 22.4 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 24.8 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Winslow Homer's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 30.5 × 50.8 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Homer's canvas presents a chain of barefoot boys engaged in the vigorous playground game of snap the whip, their bodies stretched across the verdant expanse of a rural meadow. Nine figures form this human chain, each grasping the hand of the next, their forms captured in various states of motion—from the anchoring stability of the leftmost players to the precarious suspension of those at the whip's end. The red brick schoolhouse presides over the scene, its solid geometry contrasting with the organic movement of the children and the undulating landscape. White clouds drift across a pale blue sky, while wildflowers—rendered in quick touches of red and white—dot the foreground grass.
The palette speaks of American pastoral idealism, dominated by the fresh greens of early summer grass and the warm earth tones of the boys' clothing. Homer employs a naturalistic color scheme that eschews romantic enhancement, yet the clarity of light—that particular American light—infuses the scene with an almost crystalline quality. The red schoolhouse provides the sole note of chromatic intensity, its brick facade serving as both compositional anchor and symbolic weight. The boys' white shirts catch and reflect light, creating rhythmic intervals across the horizontal sweep of figures.
Homer's brushwork reveals his confidence as a painter who had come into his mature style. The grass is rendered with quick, assured strokes that suggest rather than delineate individual blades, while the figures are modeled with greater solidity, their forms built up through careful gradations of light and shadow. This technical approach—loose in the landscape elements, more controlled in the figural work—creates a hierarchy of visual attention that serves the painting's narrative purpose. The artist's background as an illustrator is evident in the clarity of gesture and the readable quality of each boy's pose and expression.
The composition operates on a powerful diagonal that runs from lower left to upper right, following the line of boys as they stretch across the picture plane. This diagonal is counterbalanced by the horizontal elements of the distant tree line and the vertical accent of the schoolhouse. Homer positions the viewer at a slight distance, creating a sense of observation rather than participation. The boy who has lost his grip and tumbles away from the chain occupies a crucial compositional space, his isolation emphasized by the empty grass around him.
Created in 1872, seven years after the Civil War's conclusion, the painting functions as more than nostalgic genre scene. The cooperative effort required by the game, the mixture of individual strength and collective purpose, spoke to contemporary viewers about national reunification. Yet Homer, ever the acute observer, includes that falling figure—a subtle acknowledgment that not all would successfully maintain their place in the new American order. The rural setting itself was becoming anachronistic as industrialization accelerated, lending the work an elegiac quality that would have been apparent even to its first audiences.
