Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16.3 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.7 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 22.5 × 29.9 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Meindert Hobbema's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 69.3 × 92.2 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in The Wallace Collection, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

In "A Watermill," Meindert Hobbema offers a restrained yet immersive vision of the Dutch landscape - a moment caught between idyllic calm and quiet activity. Hobbema’s treatment of nature here is both detailed and atmospheric, evoking a lived-in world where rural life unfolds with its own rhythm. The central watermill, modest but steady, dominates the right side of the painting, and yet it’s the trees on the left that draw us in. They arc and sway with an almost theatrical grandeur, their dense foliage offering a counterpoint to the mill’s sturdy structure. It’s a landscape full of contrasts, yet remarkably harmonious.

The colors are softly naturalistic, dominated by greens and earthy browns. Hobbema’s handling of the foliage is particularly sensitive, almost tactile, with shades of green that range from deep, moody tones to lighter, sun-dappled patches. The sky is pale and shifting, suggesting a break in the clouds, the light filtering gently onto the scene below. The figures - so often overlooked - are painted with care, placed strategically along the winding path, adding scale and life without ever detracting from the landscape’s expansiveness.

The composition itself is strikingly balanced. The eye naturally moves from the trees - their twisting branches inviting us to linger - to the mill, where the rush of water and the quiet toil of rural industry come to life. Yet, Hobbema resists overstatement. The placement of the figures is subtle, directing the viewer’s gaze deeper into the painting, past the mill and out towards the distant horizon, where light and shadow converge in a soft glow.

What Hobbema achieves here is a remarkable synthesis of observation and composition. He captures a landscape that feels both specific - grounded in place - and timeless. The painting exudes a quiet power, inviting the viewer to appreciate not only the beauty of the scene but the life it quietly sustains.
