Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13.7 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.1 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 26.2 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Caspar David Friedrich's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 110 × 171.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Germany. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A solitary figure stands diminished against the vastness of nature, reduced to a dark vertical mark upon an expanse of pale sand. The monk, bareheaded and robed in black, occupies the lower third of the composition, positioned slightly off-center to the left. Above him wheel a few seagulls, mere specks against the immensity. The beach stretches barren and featureless, its undulating surface rendered in muted tones. Beyond this narrow strip of land, the sea extends as a band of profound darkness, while above, layers of cloud mass and shift, eventually parting to reveal patches of lighter sky. The painting presents us with elemental simplicity - earth, water, air - yet within this reduction lies profound complexity.

The chromatic restraint speaks to Friedrich's deliberate negation of conventional landscape painting. The palette moves through gradations of grey, from the sandy beige of the foreground through the leaden darkness of the water to the pearl and ash tones of the atmosphere. This near-monochromatic treatment is punctuated only by subtle hints of blue breaking through the uppermost reaches of cloud cover. The effect is one of light struggling against overwhelming greyness, a metaphor perhaps for spiritual illumination amid earthly desolation. The color serves not to beautify but to express a state of existential suspension.

Friedrich's technique reveals itself through careful observation - the paint applied in thin, considered layers that build atmospheric density. Two years of reworking have resulted in surfaces that appear almost dissolved, edges that blur and merge. The brushwork effaces itself in service of the overall effect, creating textures that suggest rather than describe. The sea's darkness emerges not from heavy impasto but from carefully modulated glazes that absorb light rather than reflect it.

The horizontal stratification of the composition - its division into three distinct bands - represents a radical departure from established pictorial conventions. Without diagonal recession, without the traditional repoussoir elements that might guide the eye into depth, Friedrich confronts us with pure frontality. The monk provides the sole vertical accent, a measuring stick for the infinite. This compositional audacity, which Kleist memorably described as leaving one feeling "as if one's eyelids had been cut away," strips away the comfortable boundaries between viewer and viewed.

Created during the height of German Romanticism and exhibited at the Berlin Academy in 1810, the painting emerged from Friedrich's profound engagement with questions of human finitude and divine infinity. Its acquisition by King Frederick William III signaled official recognition of this new mode of landscape painting - one that privileged interior experience over external description. The work's reception by writers like Kleist and Brentano confirms its immediate recognition as a statement about the modern condition: isolated consciousness confronting the unfathomable.

I ordered this for my boyfriend’s birthday as his favorite painter is C.D. Friedrich, and this is his favorite piece. I absolutely LOVE the quality of this, and I can’t wait to show him. The canvas is perfect and the painting looks absolutely phenomenal, and not to mention it is not that pricey! I will definitely be ordering more art pieces from this website in the future.
