Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.4 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 39.4 × 31 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Frank Dicksee's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 231.1 × 182.3 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Tate Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

In "The Two Crowns" (1900), Sir Frank Bernard Dicksee captures a rich tapestry of medieval chivalry and religious symbolism. The painting is a masterclass in Victorian romanticism, drenched in vivid colors and meticulous details that evoke the grandeur of the Arthurian legends.

At the heart of the composition stands a regal figure, presumably a king or knight, adorned in resplendent golden armor. His crowned head tilts slightly upwards, suggesting a moment of divine inspiration or internal reflection. The figure sits astride a noble white horse, which bows its head, seemingly acknowledging the reverence of the scene.

Surrounding the central figure is a swirl of activity, dominated by a procession of maidens clad in luxurious, flowing gowns. Their garments, rich in texture and color, reflect Dicksee's exceptional skill in rendering fabric. These women scatter petals before the knight, an act that symbolizes both honor and adoration.

The background is a tapestry of medieval architecture, with banners fluttering and soldiers standing in solemn vigil. A significant detail is the dark, shadowed crucifix to the right, contrasting starkly with the luminous knight. This juxtaposition of the knight’s earthly crown with the divine crown of thorns subtly underscores the painting’s central theme: the transient nature of worldly glory compared to the eternal significance of spiritual sacrifice.

Dicksee’s use of light and shadow enhances the dramatic tension, with the golden hues of the armor and the horse’s gleaming coat contrasting with the somber tones of the crucifix and the distant, shadowed figures. The painting, with its layered narrative and rich symbolism, invites viewers to reflect on the deeper meanings of honor, sacrifice, and the eternal quest for glory.

Hallo, I really liked the quality, but the frames would have been very expensive, so I ordered them without frames. Beste Grüße
