About the Painting

Green water – not the grey-brown Thames of postcards or memory, but an almost lurid viridian – churns beneath the heavy stone arches. André Derain's London Bridge, painted in 1906 and now housed at the Museum of Modern Art New York MOMMA, reimagines one of the world's most familiar cityscapes as a carnival of pure color. The river doesn't flow so much as pulse, its surface broken into slabs of emerald, chartreuse, lemon yellow, and occasional flickers of pink that have no business being there and yet feel absolutely right.

Look at the bridge itself. Its arches are rendered in deep indigo and violet, colors that belong more to a Provençal twilight than to London stone. Beneath the nearest arch, a wash of coral and salmon glows like heat radiating from pavement – perhaps a reflection, perhaps sheer invention. A barge floats in the lower right corner, its occupants sketched with just a few strokes of orange and black, barely figures at all. On the far bank, buildings stack up in whites, mauves, and blues, their rooflines jagged against a sky streaked with peach and rose. Depth barely exists here. Foreground and distance collapse into a single tilted plane, as though the whole scene has been pressed flat against the canvas.

Derain painted this during a two-month stay in London, commissioned by the dealer Ambroise Vollard to produce views of the Thames. He worked outdoors, setting up his easel along the embankment, and completed roughly thirty canvases. The project had an obvious predecessor: Monet's celebrated Thames series, painted just a few years earlier. But where Monet dissolved London into fog and shimmering atmosphere, Derain detonated it. His own words are telling – he described Fauvism as "our ordeal by fire" and said that colors "became charges of dynamite." You can feel that explosive impulse in every square inch of this painting. Nothing is observed passively. Every hue is pushed, intensified, made to do emotional work that naturalistic color never could.

The brushwork shifts register constantly. Broad, flat passages sit next to choppy, fragmented marks. In the water, short horizontal dashes of contrasting color create a mosaic-like shimmer that recalls Signac's pointillism – yet it's looser, more instinctive, less systematic. Along the bridge's parapet on the right, thick strokes of brown and ochre suggest masonry without describing it. Derain is not interested in texture as fact; he's interested in texture as energy.

Composition holds the whole thing together. The bridge cuts a strong diagonal from lower right to upper left, anchoring the swirl of color around a solid architectural spine. Below it, the river opens out toward the left edge, where a small dark boat provides a counterweight. Above, the skyline reads almost as a frieze – flat, decorative, crowded with rooftops and chimneys that feel more like stage scenery than real buildings.

Stand in front of this painting long enough and you can almost hear the city: the low rumble of traffic across the bridge, the slap of water against stone. There is warmth here, despite the northern latitude – the warmth of a painter working fast, high on color, determined to reinvent a city that photography and tradition had already claimed. Derain was twenty-five when he made this. It has the confidence and the recklessness of youth, and an intensity that time has done nothing to quiet.
