Painting Information
In his paintings and sketches, the artist repeatedly immortalizes the image and fate of the Parisian working woman. This painting gives the fullest expression of his sympathy, because it depicts in the foreground the contradictory movements of the two women workers. One strains all her strength; the other, dripping with fatigue, longs for rest. Her yawn reflects her condition, and the bottle of wine will perhaps give her the strength to continue her work. But this bottle above all expresses that the alcohol-induced giddiness will help the worker forget her misery, her impasse. Degas manages to express her misery, her impasse, through the use of impure colours and through the oppressive greyness of the lights (despite the daylight), which is emphasised by the bright colour of the yawning woman's scarf.
