Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 21.5 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 23.8 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 35.4 × 35.1 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Dalí's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 100 × 99 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

This grotesque construction presents itself as a monument to human self-destruction. A colossal figure, composed of dismembered and rearranged body parts, dominates the canvas against a desolate Spanish landscape. The creature appears to be tearing itself apart in an act of supreme violence, its limbs contorted and misplaced in anatomically impossible configurations. A grimacing head crowns the structure, while beneath, legs and arms stretch and pull against each other in agonizing tension. The torso has vanished entirely, leaving only extremities locked in their fatal embrace. A flaccid, phallic form draped across the truncated hip speaks to decay and dissolution.

The palette oscillates between the warmth of flesh tones and the harsh, unforgiving light of the Spanish plateau. Ochres and umbers dominate the lower register, suggesting the parched earth, while the sky shifts from pale blue to gathering storm clouds. The flesh itself is rendered in sickly yellows and pinks, with shadows that hint at putrefaction. This chromatic tension between the living and the dead, between the sensual and the repulsive, heightens the painting's visceral impact.

Dalí's technique demonstrates his academic precision in service of the irrational. The modeling of flesh is meticulous, each muscle and sinew rendered with Renaissance clarity, yet deployed to create an impossible anatomy. His brushwork varies from the smooth, almost photographic treatment of skin to the more gestural handling of the landscape and sky. The scattered beans - those incongruous details that give the work its title - are painted with the same careful attention as the monumental figure, creating disturbing shifts in scale.

The composition forces our gaze upward through the twisted architecture of flesh, from the small portrait of Freud examining a gnarled hand at lower left, through the violent diagonal of the stretched figure, to the anguished head silhouetted against turbulent clouds. This vertical thrust is counterbalanced by the horizontal expanse of the landscape, creating a cruciform structure that adds religious overtones to this secular apocalypse.

Painted in Paris as Spain teetered on the brink of civil war, the work transforms political catastrophe into psychoanalytic theater. Dalí's premonition proved tragically accurate - within months, his homeland would indeed tear itself apart in fratricidal conflict. The painting stands as both prophecy and diagnosis, a Freudian reading of national psychosis rendered with hallucinatory clarity.
