Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 18.3 × 15.2 in print therefore arrives as 20.7 × 17.5 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 26 × 21.5 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Cézanne's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 46.5 × 38.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Her face is an oval so clean it could have been drawn with a compass. Hortense Fiquet – Cézanne's long-suffering companion, his wife from 1886 – sits here stripped of ornament, stripped of context, stripped of nearly everything except presence. Portrait of Madame Cezanne, painted around 1885–90, is a work of radical quiet.

The background offers almost nothing to hold onto. A vertical divide – warm brown-green on the left, cool blue-grey on the right – suggests a wall, perhaps a curtain edge, but refuses to commit. Cézanne is not interested in setting a scene. He is interested in building a face. And build it he does, with small, deliberate touches of colour laid side by side: rosy warmth on the cheeks, a cooler greenish undertone along the jaw, pale cream across the forehead where light pools. The transitions are so fine, so incremental, that you feel less like you are looking at a portrait than watching something slowly materialise out of tinted air.

Blue dominates the lower half of the canvas. Hortense wears a loose shirt or blouse in a muted cerulean, its collar open just enough to reveal a sliver of green beneath. The brushwork here is broader, more openly constructive – you can see the direction of each stroke, the way Cézanne lays planes of slightly different blues against one another to suggest volume without resorting to shadow. It is painting as architecture, and it points unmistakably toward the geometric simplifications that would obsess Picasso and Braque two decades later.

What strikes you, standing before this canvas at the Paris Musée d'Orsay, is the stillness. Not emptiness – stillness. Hortense's dark hair, cropped with bangs across her forehead, frames the oval of her face with an almost sculptural precision. One might imagine Brancusi looking at this head and seeing the seed of his own polished forms. Matisse, who once owned this very painting, admired exactly that quality, speaking of the "magnificent stillness" he wished to bring into his own art.

And yet Hortense is not a sculpture. Her lips are slightly parted. Her gaze, directed just past us, holds something unreadable – patience, perhaps, or the particular endurance of someone who sat for Cézanne through session after session. "The success of art is the face," the painter once told Ambroise Vollard, and you sense here how seriously he meant it. Every nuance of temperature in the skin – the faint warmth near the ear, the cooler shadow beneath the chin – has been observed and placed with the care of someone cataloguing light itself.

There is a coolness to this painting, almost physical, like the still air of a room with stone floors on a spring morning. Nothing dramatic happens. Nothing needs to. Cézanne has made serenity itself the subject, and in doing so created a portrait that feels less like a record of a woman than a meditation on what a human face can hold when everything extraneous falls away.
