Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 18.1 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 20.5 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 26.3 × 31.5 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Cézanne's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 46 × 55 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

"Near Auvers-sur-Oise" - a Cézanne that sings of the French countryside. The canvas breathes with verdant life, a patchwork of greens and earthy hues that unfold. Cézanne's brush dances across the scene, each stroke building up a world of depth and texture.

The village nestles in the foreground, its clustered buildings a jumble of cool grays and warm ochres. Rooftops peek out from behind lush foliage, their angles softened by Cézanne's distinctive touch. There's a rhythm to how he's laid out the houses - not quite orderly, yet not chaotic either. Just the natural sprawl of a rural hamlet.

Beyond the village, rolling hills stretch towards the horizon. Cézanne's palette shifts subtly here, the greens becoming cooler, bluer as they recede. It's a masterclass in perspective, achieved not through rigid lines but through color alone. A few vertical accents - perhaps distant trees or steeples - punctuate the landscape, drawing the eye upward.

The sky above is a study in muted drama. Cézanne's clouds are substantial things, rendered in broad strokes of lavender and cream. They hover with a quiet weight, anchoring the composition and lending a sense of timelessness to the scene.

What strikes me most is how Cézanne flirts with abstraction while never quite abandoning representation. Up close, it's a riot of brushstrokes and color planes. Step back, and a living landscape emerges. It's this tension that gives the painting its enduring power - a glimpse of the modern lurking within a tranquil rural idyll.
