The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16.1 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.5 × 24 in. Start with the original, which measures 45.7 × 61 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. About the Painting

Birger Sandzen's "Sunset Over the Trees" from 1910. What a curious little scene this Swedish-American painter has conjured up for us.

The canvas thrums with an ethereal energy - Sandzen's got the sky positively vibrating. He's laid on those blues and yellows with gusto, hasn't he? Thick, choppy brushstrokes swirl above, giving us a sense of restless movement in the heavens.

Down below, it's all moody silhouettes. A smattering of trees punctuate the horizon line, their forms simplified into inky smudges against the fading light. Sandzen's not fussed about details here - he's after pure, primal shapes.

That sun though - what a cheeky little orb! Peeking out from behind a veil of clouds, it's rendered in a warm, buttery yellow. It's the anchor of the whole composition, drawing the eye like a magnet.

The palette is deceptively simple at first glance. But look closer and you'll spot hints of lavender, seafoam green, and dusky rose woven throughout the sky. It's as if Sandzen's captured that fleeting moment when day surrenders to night, and the world goes soft around the edges.

There's a hint of melancholy in this twilight scene, don't you think? Those lonely trees, that vast expanse of sky - it all feels terribly intimate, yet somehow universal. Sandzen's tapped into something elemental here, distilling the essence of a sunset into pure, evocative color.
